NWL Products Currently In Service

Two 65 kVA 3 phase transformers sharing a common magnetic coreThis transformer and capacitor are key components in the motor drive control system for powerplants of the newly commissioned Nimitz class aircraft carriers (uss Ronald Reagan and uss George HW Bush).  Special features of the transformer include:

  • 65 kVA rating in a very small footprint (6 cu. ft)
  • 24 pulse output
  • Two 3-phase transformers on a common magnetic core

Stainless steel film capacitor from NWL for RDPS programSpecial features of the capacitor include:

  • Integrated buswork
  • Stainless steel construction
  • Very tight dimensional tolerances

Both products meet MIL-S-901D specifications for shipboard shock and vibration testing requirements.

NWL DC link film capacitor used in surface to air missile defense system

This capacitor is used in the guidance system for the Patriot Missile, the primary land-based surface-to-air (SAM) defense system deployed by the U.S. Army.  Unique features include the following:

  • 2 precision machined Stainless steel flanges
  • Very specific electrical performance characteristics
  • Ruggedized construction for combat use

NWL power supply used with AEGIS SPY radar

This power supply is used with the phased array AN SPY-1 radar system onboard all AEGIS class cruisers and destroyers.  The revolutionary design of this system enables these ships to function as the battle management center, a role previously confined to aircraft carriers.  Special features of this power supply include:

  • 75 kVA rating
  • Auxiliary transformer packaged with circuit protection
  • Complies to Deck-Mounted (Class I) MIL-S-901D shock tests

nanocrystalline core common mode inductor indirect water cooledThis common mode inductor is used in the integrated auxiliary power system being designed for the new DDG-1000 class warship.  There are also plans to retrofit this system onto Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.  Special features of this product include:

  • Nanocrystalline core
  • Indirect water cooling
  • Al 6061T heat sinks
  • Coil designed for continuous high frequency harmonics up to 50 kHz
