January 2010:
The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has ordered 10 NWL PowerPlusX switchmode power supply modules for their 12 GeV Upgrade. This is one of the national laboratories infrastructure improvement projects contained in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Each module consists of four 70 kW PowerPlusX™ switchmode power supplies, which are independently controlled but electrically paralleled for a maximum power output of 224 kW. Each PowerPlusX will feed a set of two klystron tubes with a secondary voltage of 16kV at 3.5 amps.
PowerPlusX eliminates the need for crowbar thryratrons for klystron protection because there is much less stored energy in the switchmode topology compared to an SCR controlled T/R set.
