Water Cooled Capacitors for High Current, High Voltage DC

NWL's WAC-Series integral water cooled capacitors encompass a great range of high current and high voltage DC applications. By directly water cooling the capacitor, this enables us to produce a single package capable of handling currents up to 5000 A rms.
These capacitors have long been used in the heat treating industy, and their robustness and reliability have been proven with many decades of successful installations. As power conversion equipment designs continue to increase in both capacity and density, thermal management has become a very significant issue in these systems. While most of the attention is paid to removing heat from the IGBT modules via heat sinks or chill plates, DC link capacitors generate a tremendous amount of heat in their own right. If not properly controlled, this excess heat can detrimentally affect the other electronic components in the system.
Renewable energy inverter designers are incorporating our water cooled capacitors into their designs to solve heat problems and reduce component volume. For the same amount of current, a water cooled capacitor occupies less than half the space of a comparable set of air cooled capacitors. A recent technical paper presented at PCIM 2010 discusses this in greater detail.
