NWL has a rich history of developing innovative solutions for our customers. Below is a sampling of some ofsome recent and significant projects we've worked on, grouped by product category:
Capacitors
Application Note 100 - Ultra low capacitor for photovoltaic grid tie-in inverter.
Application Note 101 - Direct water cooled capacitors enable extremely high current flow in a small package.
Challenge: Can a reliable 75 uF 1200 VDC capacitor be designed to operate across 4 IGBT’s and handle 150 amps rms @ 50 kHz switching frequency?
NWL Solution: By understanding high current and high frequency electronics, NWL was able to engineer, design and produce this challenging capacitor. NWL constructed a single customized package with additional easy access DC current input posts.
Results: This capacitor reduced impedance between IGBT’s, as well as yielded an unprecedented 1.5 nH inductance.
Challenge: A potential customer’s need became urgent when a dry resin potted AC voltage 60 Hz harmonic filter capacitor was a constraint to an inverter design. This customer needed a solution fast, and a solution with military standards of reliability.
NWL Solution: NWL met that challenge. NWL drew from their state of the art equipment, specialized capacitor films, and proven manufacturing processes to bring this product to life. The design was proven by performing an extended 2000+ hour accelerated life test at elevated temperature. The results confirmed a reliable design.
Results: NWL proceeded with fulfilling this initial large order, and began a relationship with a new customer.
Challenge: Sometimes when IGBT’s are used at low frequencies like 60-180 Hz, the extended pulse width on the snubber capacitor can elevate the RMS voltage to a high value. In this case, 700 VAC rms was need on a 1.50 uF 25 amp rms @ 55 Deg C direct mounting 1600 VDC snubber capacitor. Challenge accepted.
NWL Solution: NWL relied on standard manufacture processes and implemented an innovated design unique to higher voltage requirements.
Results: Capacitor unit was successfully installed, tested, and placed on the bill of material to be used for this as well as future applications demanding the 700 VAC rms condition.
Magnetics
Challenge: Due to the failure of a competitors 18MW, 34.5kV input oil filled transformer, a customer wanted to develop a combination air and water cooled unit on a very tight schedule.
NWL Solution: NWL designed, manufactured, and fully qualified a unit in 7 months.
Results: The customer subsequently ordered 44 more units over an 18 month period.
Power Supplies
Challenge: A potential customer wanted a uniquely configured 120kW, 150kV switch mode power supply to support their rapid entry into a new market segment. They wanted to incorporate a formerly separate floating high voltage control system into the main high voltage tank.
NWL Solution: Using the PowerPlus technology platform, NWL delivered the first unit in less than 7 months from order receipt.
Results: The customer successfully launched their product, and soon after began receiving production orders.
Challenge: A customer required 750kW DC power supplies with greater than .87 power factor at constant kW loading over a 10 to 1 voltage range.
NWL Solution: NWL used a sequential SCR switching technique to meet this difficult requirement.
Results: The customer has purchased and successfully operated over 200 units.
