PowerPlus - Switchmode for Industrial Applications

PowerPlusX in two packaged configurationsNWL first developed PowerPlus, our switchmode power supply, to provide an integrated high voltage system to the electrostatic precipitator market for superior dust collection.  With more than 1,500 units delivered worldwide, this product has markedly improved particle collection efficiencies by delivering higher average voltages with very low DC ripple.

Since then, a number of companies have incorporated our PowerPlus technology into their high voltage systems.  Most high voltage supplies have very compact packaging, and most applications only require controlled releases of energy. This is a perfectly good solution for most industrial applications, but there are circumstances where the existing supplies are neither rugged enough nor large enough to handle the harsher environments or more demanding duty cycles required.  PowerPlus can now fill this void with systems up to 100 kVA and 500kW, packaging that can withstand extreme weather conditions, and a circuit topology that can handle repeated arcing and sparking events.

PowerPlus has been used with electron beam systems for the following applications:

  • Curing of inks and adhesives in labeling, packaging and lamination
  • Melting of specialty powder metals
  • Coating of precision metal components, such as jet engine turbine blades

Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory has recently installed 10 PowerPlus units for their klystron power supplies.  Please click here for more details on this project, and here for a schematic of the system footprint.
