PowerPlusX - Switchmode for Industrial Applications

PowerPlusX in two packaged configurationsNWL first developed PowerPlus, our switchmode power supply, in order to provide a superior high voltage package for electrostatic precipitators.  With more than 1000 units delivered worldwide, this product has markedly improved particle collection efficiencies by delivering higher average voltages with very low DC ripple.

Since then, a number of companies have incorporated our PowerPlusX™ technology into their high voltage systems.  PowerPlusX is a fully integrated system with a standard, scalable design.  From a common platform, each power supply can be configured to our customer's specific requirements.  PowerPlusX provides the following performance benefits compared to standard Transformer/Recitifiers:

  • Smaller footprint - high frequency transformers are much smaller and lighter than their 50/60 Hz counterparts.
  • Integrated package - switchmode design close-couples the controls and power electronics in a single unit.
  • Higher Power Factor - PowerPlus has a PF of over 0.90, compared to 0.65 for linear transformers.

PowerPlusX has been used with electron beam systems for the following applications:

  • Curing of inks and adhesives in labeling, packaging and lamination
  • Melting of specialty powder metals
  • Coating of precision metal components, such as jet engine turbine blades

We are also providing Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory with 10 PowerPlusX units for their klystron power supplies.  Please click here for more details on this project.
